Free Transfer was originally conceived as a proposal for the MTA Centennial Celebration Design Competition, in 2003. The notion of free connection, or “free transfer”, was a privilege acquired by transit riders only after the unification of the three independent systems, in 1940. Inspired by the various map designs that were created and adopted by the IRT, BRT/BMT, IND, the New York City Transit Authority and, later, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and with this legacy in mind, I incorporated various symbols for train routes and connections as imagery to commemorate the success of MTA’s unifying a subway system that has grown from three independent rail systems to one of the largest public transportation systems in the world.
